Jake

November 19, 2016 by

Letting Jake go was one of the hardest things our family has ever had to do. He was the best friend, protector, companion and spare food disposal we could have ever dreamed of. At almost 11 years old, he was given a 2-3 month prognosis but lived for another 6 months. After having made the decision to let him go, he had a good day so we went for a walk around a nearby park.  He seemed to be doing better leaving me further conflicted with my decision.  I asked for a sign to let me know if we were making the right decision and true to his character, Jake took care of me.  As we walked around the pond at the park, I noticed a memorial stone. As I stopped to read the inscription, Jake came over and licked the stone giving me the clearest sign I could have hoped for.  I don’t know who Ben was, but his memorial allowed Jake to give me my sign and the best peace I could have hoped for during this time.  As I find myself missing Jake and contemplating getting a new dog, I keep in mind the words he left me. ” Don’t cry because it’s over. Smile because it happened.” – Dr. Suess

Jake, you will always be loved and in our hearts. Your contributions to our family will never be forgotten. Rest in Peace Big Guy!

Your beloved pet is sick

The diagnosis and subsequent prognosis aren't good. Now is the time to contemplate advanced animal hospice care or putting your pet to sleep (euthanasia). But where do you turn for help? What are the next steps? How do you make this final period of your companion’s life as peaceful as possible? Read more...
